The Japanese government is rushing to dump radioactive contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the ocean. The Japanese government claims to be managing radioactive contaminated water scientifically and safely, but it has never provided accurate information on the types and total amount of radioactive material in the water, nor has it properly studied "biological enrichment" of radioactive material. Radioactive materials dumped in the ocean will be the first to arrive off the coast of Vancouver, riding the currents from Fukushima, and the first to reach our tables through fish like salmon and tuna. Also it threatens the livelihoods of our fishermen and fisheries workers and jeopardizes the health and safety of us and our future generations. In addition, dumping radioactive contaminated water at sea is a clear violation of international maritime law and sets a bad precedent for weakening radioactive waste disposal standards. Furthermore, all country will now learn the lesson that it is okay to dump radioactive waste at sea.
There has never been a proper environmental assessment of the adverse effects of radioactive materials on marine ecosystems.
We therefore demand the following.

1. Stop dumping of Fukushima contaminated water into the ocean!
2. The Trudeau government should firmly oppose ocean dumping and take the case to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea!
3. The Japanese government should concrete the Fukushima contaminated water and store it in their country!
