Hanover College invites the campus community to participate in a variety of community service projects honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King on Monday, January 15, 2024 and throughout the week. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni are invited to participate in these celebratory campus and community events. Community service projects will allow Hanover students and various clubs and organizations to put their knowledge into action for a group or cause in the community. 7:30 pm - International Film Series: Selma (Wednesday, January 10):Chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. Discussion will follow the film and refreshments will be available. IFS is held in Classic Hall (CLA 102).

8:00 pm-12:00 pm - Volunteer at the Jefferson County Animal Shelter (Monday, January 15): Cleaning, cuddles, walks and connection with the animals. Address: 2727 Hannah Dr, Madison, IN (Hilltop)

12:00 pm-4:00 pm - Volunteer at the Jefferson County Animal Shelter (Monday, January 15): Cleaning, cuddles, walks and connection with the animals. Address: 2727 Hannah Dr, Madison, IN (Hilltop)

8:30 am - 11:00 am - House of Hope Community Service Project (Monday, January 15): Food donations, sorting food, and preparing the pantry. Address: 100 E Second Street, Suite H (Downtown Madison). Enter door facing First Street.

12:00 am-1:00 pm - Environmental Service Project and Lunch (Monday, January 15): Helping to organize the Hanover College Free Store after the holidays. Pizza will be provided. Free Store (Lynn Hall)

1:15 pm-5:00 pm - Attending field trip to the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville (Monday, January 15). This is a free day at the Center for the public. Please email pope@hanover.edu if you are willing to volunteer to be a driver for this event. Address: 144 North 6th Street, Louisville, KY.

10:00 am - 5:00 pm - LGBTQ+ Voting Rights Information (Tuesday, January 16): The LGBTQ+ Center will have information available on LGBTQ+ voting rights in the state of Indiana and across the country. This information will be located in the center on January 16 from 10am-5pm.

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm - Voter Registration Table (Tuesday, January 16): Please email pope@hanover.edu if you are a student and would like to volunteer to assist with this event. Campus Center Lobby.

4:00 pm-6:00 pm - Boys and Girls Club of Jefferson County (Tuesday, January 16): Volunteers will read short multicultural books and stories to children of mixed-age groups. The purpose of the readings will be to celebrate diversity and help children to think about, value, respect, and celebrate the differences in all people. Rides will be available via the Madison Shuttle. 1551 M.S.H. Northgate Road (Madison)

1:00 pm-3:00 pm - Haq Multicultural Center Open House (Wednesday, January 17): Stop by the Haq Center for refreshments and learn about the Haq Center. While you are there, take a moment to make a caring card to brighten up someone's day or to paint . Help to bring cheer to local health care workers, frontline Covid-19 workers, and don't forget our local senior citizens. The Haq Center is located in Brown Campus Center.

4:00 pm-5:30 pm - La Casa Amiga Volunteer Day (Wednesday, January 17): Volunteers are needed to help students in reading, math, and writing. Transportation is available via the Madison Shuttle. Address: 419 East Street, Madison, IN.

5:30 pm-8:00 pm - Meal Pack Out (Wednesday, January 17): Help to pack 40,000 meals to distribute in Louisville area. You will also need to sign up with Islamic Relief USA Organization to officially register for this event. Please visit: https://irusa.org/meal-pack-out/. 7:00 pm - Community Conversation with Sue Wells Livers on King's Legacy of Voting Rights (Thursday, January 18): Local historian Sue Livers will discuss Civil Rights from an historical perspective and its significance for the present-day racial justice movement. Fitzgibbon Recital Hall, Lynn Center for Fine Arts

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm - Meditation on King's Principles of Nonviolence (Friday, January 19): Rev. Catherine Knott, Ph.D., will lead a guided meditation reflecting on King’s principles of nonviolence. Lunch provided! Haq Center (Campus Center).

2:00 pm - 5:00 pm - Habitat for Humanity Build Day (Friday, January 19): 12 volunteers needed to help build a new home for a single mother in our area. Volunteers will need to complete additional information with the organization.

I will not be able to attend any MLK Week events.
