Hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to fill this out. This survey will be used to collect data on the effects of fossilization and individual experiences for my group to present to our linguistics course (LING274). Names and personal information will be anonymized!
Simply refers to what languages you learned first and second. English is my first/native language, so it is my L1. French is my second language, so it is my L2.
Interlanguage-
Interlanguage refers to the knowledge system that forms when you learn a second language. Think of it as the mix between your first language and your second language in an attempt to fill the gaps in your learning, when you have not yet achieved full fluency. For example, when learning French as your second language (L2) and you already speak English (L1), your L1 will help will the gaps of knowledge in you L2.
Fossilization-
Fossilization refers to the concept of cessation of language learning before achieving your second language fluency/norms/goals. This can look like incorrectly conjugating certain verbs, no matter how much you are exposed to them, or incorrect negation structures. Essentially, they are mistakes that do not go away.
