Careers in Science 2024 Application
Careers in Science is a multi-year, year-round, science education and youth development opportunity for San Francisco high school students who come from communities underrepresented in STEM. In a paid position that lasts 2-3 years, CiS interns gain a robust set of skills through specialized training, research in the field and lab, mentorship from STEM professionals, and opportunities to teach visitors on the museum’s public floor.

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for a Careers in Science position, applicants must:

» Be a San Francisco resident who attends an SFUSD school (private school, charter school and home school students will be considered on a case-by-case basis)
» Be a 9th- or 10th-grade student in the current (2023-2024) school year
» Be enrolled in school full-time and have a minimum GPA of 2.5
» Be authorized to work in the US and able to obtain a valid work permit 
» Commit to all attendance requirements on a year-round, multi-year basis, including after-school, weekend, and summer work
» Be able to commute to the Academy in Golden Gate Park for all in-person work. Interns may be required to work remotely for some activities, therefore applicants must have access to high speed internet
» Demonstrate interest in and enthusiasm for learning about science, teaching science to diverse audiences, and conducting science research

Program Commitments
Careers in Science (CiS) is a year-round commitment. Interns are required to:

» Work 5-10 hours per week during the school year and 10-16 hours per week in the summer 
» Attend New Intern Orientation (June 10-14, 2024 from 10 AM - 3 PM)
» Attend Wednesday trainings every week in the summer (1 - 3 PM)
» Attend Wednesday trainings every other week during the school year (4:30 - 6:30 PM) 
» Work up to 2 days per week after school (4:30 - 6:30 PM) and on Saturdays (10 AM - 3:30 PM) during the school year 
» Attend an overnight, multi-day trip during SFUSD Spring Break
