The following questions relate to participants' level of financial need in order to be able to take part in our programs. Howl uses a sliding scale approach for program fees to support the long-term sustainability of our programs, while also reducing economic barriers to participation. The idea behind this approach is that people pay an amount that they are able to, to cover program services, events, and items. Those with access to more resources pay more and thus help others participate in the program.
For a sliding scale approach to work, it relies on truthfulness, respect for complexity, deep self-reflection, and accountability. These values are at the heart of our work and our community, which is why we ask prospective participants to consider them as part of the application process. The full per person cost for Howl to run this program is $14,000, which includes program and living costs. We offer the program at an already subsidized cost of $10,000 per person thanks to the support of our funders.
When considering the following questions, we encourage you to contemplate the following factors in your assessment of your financial need:
- Your income and what you can truly afford
- Your ability to help those with fewer resources
- The cost of accommodation, food, transportation, and activities
- How your payments will help to make this program more accessible for everyone
- The cost of running a non-profit organization
Please note that the amount of financial assistance we can provide will vary based on the amount of funding that we have available for the particular Semester and the need of our applicants. It is possible that we may not be able to provide the full amount of financial assistance that is requested. In this event, we will work with participants to make up the difference via fundraising, work/study, etc.
Upon acceptance into the program, all successful applicants are required to cover the $500 program deposit 60 days prior to the program start date.
