ffleming@oxy.eduThe OXY ARTS Collaborate course brings a teaching artist, Oxy students, and youth from the neighboring Highland Park schools together in creative collaboration. During the first six weeks of the semester, Oxy students will learn core arts education and public engagement pedagogy. They will work with lead teaching artist Patricia Yossen and collaborate in teaching teams to develop original lesson plans. In the following 6 weeks of the semester, Oxy students will collaboratively lead an after school art workshop for elementary OR middle school youth, culminating in a final public presentation.
There are two Collaborate courses, one works with Elementary students in grades 4+5, the other works with middle school students in grades 6-8:
Collaborate - Middle School
Wednesdays, 4 - 6pm
Office hours: Mondays, 4 - 5pm
Collaborate - Elementary School
Thursdays, 4 - 6pm
Office hours: Mondays, 5- 6pm
You are expected to commit four hours per week outside of class time for a 2-unit course. Office hours account for a portion of these hours, but you will be expected to use the additional time to work with your teaching team, develop your lesson plans and prepare for your classes. During the following 6 weeks, you will be leading your own class during the 4-6pm class time. It is a requirement of this course that you can attend office hours weekly and have time to prep during the week.
In this course, you will be responsible for developing your own original curriculum that you will teach to local youth. Oxy students will be assigned to teach in teams of two - if you have a collaborator in mind who you would like to teach with, please identify that in your application.
This course provides Oxy students with the opportunity to:
1. think outside the box in collaboration with a professional teaching artist to develop original arts curriculum.
2. experience working as a teaching team to develop lesson plans and experience communicating ideas into artistic practice.
3. leave the course with a completed, original curriculum, a teaching philosophy, professional teaching experience on their resumes and tools to apply for teaching positions in the future.
4. provide community youth with free and creative learning opportunities in the arts, and the opportunity to be mentored by students in higher education.
5. learn how to plan, install and present a public art showcase of their collaborative work, and to share what they have accomplished with their family, friends, and neighbors.
Course enrollment is subject to completion of application and approval by Oxy Arts. Upon approval by Oxy Arts, an enrollment waiver will allow you to complete enrollment into the course.
BIPOC and First Gen students strongly encouraged to apply.
