BWT's Season 10 in 2022
Breakthrough Workshop Theatre is excited to announce the return of "Breakthrough Workshops" with a trio of small-cast, in-person plays that will be presented in January, March & June 2022 at the Coronado Public Library, as part of BWT's milestone 10th Anniversary Season. BWT is also currently seeking writers for one of two virtual projects that will be presented in Summer 2022.  All casting information is detailed below.

Since we were founded in 2013, we have provided 962 artistic opportunities to 203 different Breakthrough Artists over 63 projects.  With limited resources during this unprecedented time, we know that we will not be able to offer participation to everyone interested, but we will do our very best to facilitate as many breakthroughs as possible for as many artists as possible.

As with all BWT projects, we encourage and celebrate a wide range of artists of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels. If you are interested in being considered, please read through this form carefully and fill it out completely.

Breakthrough Workshop #1: "Tiny Beautiful Things"  [IN-PERSON]
TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS
Based on the Book by Cheryl Strayed
Adapted for the Stage by Nia Vardalos
Directed by Ira Bauer-Spector

Dates: January 2, 2022 (Info Meeting), January 21 to 23, 2022 (Breakthrough Workshop)

CASTING NOTES
— Seeking 6 actors of any gender, age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or disability status
— The role of “Sugar” has been cast

When a struggling writer was asked to take over an unpaid, anonymous position of advice columnist, she used empathy and her personal experiences to help those seeking guidance for obstacles both large and small. "Tiny Beautiful Things," based on the best-selling book by Cheryl Strayed and adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos, is a play about reaching when you’re stuck, healing when you’re broken, and finding the courage to take on the questions which have no answers.

Breakthrough Workshop #2: "Real Women Have Curves" [IN-PERSON]
REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES
Written by Josefina López
Directed by Elizabeth Arellano

Dates: February 13, 2022 (Info Meeting), March 4 to 6, 2022 (Breakthrough Workshop)

CASTING NOTES
— Seeking 5 full-figured Latina actresses of various ages, as well open to any sexual orientation or disability status
— NOTE: while there is no nudity in the play, there is a climactic scene of empowerment in which all five characters strip down to their undergarments together

Set in a tiny East Los Angeles sewing factory in 1987, this is the outrageously funny story of five full-figured Mexican-American women who are racing to meet nearly impossible production deadlines in order to keep their tiny factory from going under. And while they work, hiding from the Immigration and Naturalization Service, they talk about their husbands and lovers, their children, and their dreams for the future. "Real Women Have Curves," written by Josefina López, is a microcosm of the Latina immigrant experience, while celebrating real women's bodies, the power of women, and the incredible bond that happens when women work together.

Breakthrough Workshop #3: "Circle Mirror Transformation" [IN-PERSON]
CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION
Written by Annie Baker
Directed by Cecilia J. Pang

Dates: June 5, 2022 (Info Meeting), June 24 to 26, 2022 (Breakthrough Workshop)

CASTING NOTES
— Seeking 4 actors (1M, 3F) of any age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or disability status
— The role of “Schultz” has been cast

When four lost New Englanders who enroll in Marty’s six-week-long community-center drama class begin to experiment with harmless games, hearts are quietly torn apart, and tiny wars of epic proportions are waged and won. "Circle Mirror Transformation," written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker, is a beautifully crafted diorama, a petri dish in which we see, with hilarious detail and clarity, the antic sadness of a motley quintet.

Seeking WRITERS for "The Pride Project 2022" [VIRTUAL]
THE PRIDE PROJECT 2022
Conceived & Directed by Ira Bauer-Spector

In Summer 2022, Breakthrough Workshop Theatre will produce a virtual presentation of The Pride Project 2022, a collection of 8 original short plays inspired by the legacies of 11 LGBTQ+ heroes. While the shows will be cast at a later date, we are currently seeking Breakthrough Artists interested in being a WRITER for one or more of these original 10-minute plays.

Writing can be done with a flexible schedule, with the first draft due by the end of January 2022, and the final script to be completed by the end of February 2022.

NOTE: As this project is virtual, it is also open to artists outside of the San Diego area.
If interested in being a writer for "The Pride Project 2022," which of these LGBTQ+ heroes would you be inspired to have as your subject? Please select all potential subjects of interest.
To facilitate as many breakthroughs as possible for as many artists as possible, we may not be able to offer participation for all projects you are interested in. If you have indicated your interest in more than one of our 2022 projects, please list them in order of preference here.
Breakthrough Workshop Theatre is not a traditional theatre company.  We are an education-focused nonprofit that uses projects such as staged readings and musical concerts to facilitate individualized artistic and/or personal "breakthroughs," established by our artists of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels at the beginning of each process.  We are continuously pushing our artists to challenge themselves and approach these vulnerable and inspiring processes with an open mind and heart, so think of that as you answer the last question.
Whether this would be your 1st time with BWT or your 30th, please briefly share why you are inspired to join us during our 2022 season. *
