The COSS (formerly CoADE) fall conference, 2019 takes place this year at Pikes Peak Community College, Centennial Campus, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Friday, October 25, 2019
The title of the conference is “Cultivating Student Success: Maintaining Equity in Education.”
We are requesting proposals for sessions on how we, as educators, can adapt to the pre-requisite and co-requisite course changes caused by Bill HB 19-1206, and the impact on equity in education for students.
We want you to share the models your department has implemented or plans to implement. What are you doing that will help your colleagues negotiate the changes? Your proposal can share something on a larger-scale like a piloted program, or on a smaller scale, like accelerated learning in co-requisite classes. Specifically, if your presentations can address any of the questions or concerns below, it would be ideal for this conference.
•
Do we need to expand our adult basic education offerings?
•
The co-requisite model has shown success in some studies, but does it work?
•
What kinds of students show success?
•
What does the data show for prerequisite vs co-requisite?
•
What happens to the students who aren’t ready?
•
How do they get prepared? Will Dev Ed adjuncts be allowed to teach support (parachute) courses?
•
Will the number of credits for math co-reqs change?
•
Will CCCS have a group to work on possible changes to co-req numbers, names, credits, etc.?
•
When will the new legislation be made public?
•
Will it result in more students failing classes?
•
How will we assess this?
•
Can we differentiate STEM (121) and non-STEM (120, 135, 155/6, 107, 103, 108) pathways? In the current data available, co-reqs seem great for non-STEM pathways, but not so great for STEM.
Proposals should include instructional-based demonstrations, grounded research, or represent completed or ongoing evaluation or research. Appropriate proposals might include reports of program activities based on research and theory, reviews of assessment instruments and techniques, results from master’s theses or doctoral dissertations, reports of ongoing program evaluation, reviews of literature, models for evaluation, summaries and analyses of state or local data collection activities, or research-based theories or models appropriate to developmental education.
All presentation sessions will be 60 minutes in length.
Proposals must be received by October 4, 2019 to be considered. Spots are limited, so please submit your proposals as early as you can.
