This volunteer role will assist in the general maintenance and stewardship of the natural areas within the Nichols Arboretum and/or Matthaei Botanical Gardens properties focused on ecological restoration projects under the direction of our Natural Areas Management Team. Projects in this role ultimately aim to decrease invasive plant species and increase native plant species. As expected in a Michigan climate, projects and priorities shift seasonally, but are present year round.
Potential Opportunities and Projects:
Pulling, bagging and removing invasive plant species
Cutting, dragging and chipping brush from invasive tree and shrub removal
Native plant seed collection, cleaning, and cataloging
Assisting with prescribed burns
Commitment and Schedule: Currently this role is only available weekdays (M-F) likely during the hours of 8am-4pm. We prefer that the volunteer can put in a minimum shift of 4 hours at least once a week, but we are open to discussion with all volunteer applicants.
Must be willing and able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, tolerate biting insects, working around poison ivy and other challenges of field work. Previous experience with landscape care, botany, ecology or ecological restoration is a plus, but is not required. An ability or willingness to learn to use a variety of hand tool. The ability to move and transport up to 40 lbs. A good work ethic, enthusiasm for teamwork and a willingness to learn.
