2021 Virtual SCJEA State Media Contest Registration
From Santa Barbara to San Diego, high schools are invited to send their best student journalists to the 2021 SCJEA State Media Contest that will be held virtually on March 13. Register by March 7, 2021.

Registration Steps
1. After you complete your registration, you will receive a confirmation and invoice via email.
2. Do NOT prepare your payment until you receive the confirmation and invoice (see payment information below).
Note: Once your registration has been submitted, no changes or refunds (additions/subtractions) can be made. You may substitute students on the day of the competition for some categories, if necessary.
Entry Fee Information
All categories are $10 per student and each school must pay a $30 SCJEA dues fee (if they are not current with their dues). Fees cover the cost of trophies, medals, certificates, supplies, mailing of the items. We also provide a small gift for the professional journalists/judges.

Please make checks payable to "SCJEA" and mail it to SCJEA C/O Adriana Chavira, 6179 1/2 Cleon Avenue, North Hollywood, CA 91606.  You may substitute students on the day of the competition, if necessary, but ONLY in non-qualifying contests. If you want to make a substitution in News, Opinion, Feature or Sports, the sub MUST HAVE QUALIFIED at the regional competition.
State Student Media Contests
We will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday March 13 with a WELCOME to all participants and we will review the contests. Then, participants will go into various Zoom meetings. The links will be sent the day before to the adviser.

For the writing contests (News, Features, Opinion, Sports, Novice News, Review Writing) and Editorial Cartoon, participants will hear a presentation of about 20 minutes, have a Q & A of about 10-15 minutes and then have 1 hour to write. Student will PDF their entries with their contest code and email it to an address that will be provided to advisers before the day of the contest. Students competing in News, Features, Opinion, Sports MUST have qualified at one of our regional Student Media Contests in February.

Photo entries (with their captions) will be emailed to socaljea@gmail.com by March 7. Students must attend a critique session (held at the same time as the writing contests) on March 13.

There are two a yearbook contests: theme development and yearbook layout design. Students will have two hours to work on their entries and submit them as PDFs.

There is no newspaper design contest this year.

Winners of the State Student Media Contests, California All-Stars Contest and scholarships will be announced on Friday March 19 on our website, Twitter and Facebook accounts.
SCJEA Scholarships
SCJEA awards $2,000 in four scholarships to graduating seniors. The scholarships deadline is February 26.

We also give up to $2,000 for underclass members and newish (three years and under) advisers to attend summer workshops. Visit our website at www.socaljea.org for the application

All students in these categories MUST HAVE placed in their local media contest. Students will hear a speaker(s) or a presentation and write about it.

Students in the Novice News category will attend the News Writing contest. Participants must be in their first year of publication. Didn't have to qualify at a regional contest.

Artists will attend the news contest and draw an editorial cartoon to go along with the topic. Students will be allowed to use a tablet if they have one to draw their cartoon. Submission will be a PDF.

Students will write a review on something related to arts and entertainment.  Don't have to qualify at a regional contest.

With most schools doing distance learning, we're only offering one photography category this year. Photographers will submit 5-8 photos with captions depicting "Life in Quarantine." Directions will be emailed to the adviser after registration is completed. Students must be present to compete in this category.  Don't have to qualify at a regional contest. Photos could have been submitted at a regional contest but not in the 2020 SCJEA Student Media Contests.
