Know+Want+Learn: Thinking about Your Research Question
For this project you are thinking more in depth about the research question you will pursue in our current Unit 2 and upcoming Unit 3. It's important that you choose something you want to know more about, not something you think you already know the answer to. Think about the essay and writing we did about the importance of curiosity. What makes you curious?

You might draw a research question from a text we read. Remembering James Baldwin's "A Talk to Teachers" written in 1963, you may want to research how and if New York City schools have changed since then. You might want to research what people can learn from video games. You might want to research issues surrounding the current COVID-19, such as schooling, how families have been affected, or how the search for a vaccine is being handled, or how the nursing field is being affected. You might want to research social justice issues. You might want to research where people get ideas for writing music. Just find something that makes you curious and will have enough material to find valuable research.

Hint: you do need to have a general topic before you begin this survey

What topic would you like to explore and know more about? You might answer this in the form of a question. (Hint: no "yes or no" questions" for this project)
KNOW: Set a timer on your phone or watch a clock and take five minutes to brainstorm everything you can about what you ALREADY know about this topic or question. Don't pause. If you get stuck, write "I'm stuck" and then keep going to finish the five minutes.
WANT: Set the timer again and write for five minutes about what you WANT to know about this same topic. What compels you to want to more?
Here is where you do some research. This time set a timer for 10-15 minutes and look up your topic on the internet. Check the box when you are done
LEARNED: Finally, set your timer for another five minutes and write as quickly as you can what you just learned from your 10-15 minute research spree.
+ STILL WANT TO KNOW: This is the most important question, but we had to do all of the above to get here. After doing this very basic internet research, what questions do you still want to know? Try to come up with three questions about your topic that you will be able to research for a few weeks. (Remember, no "yes or no" questions.)
