Bicycle parking policy, design and practices remain in the shadows of urban planning and city management, and yet provide a critical service for urban cyclists. Sufficient, safe and well-designed parking for bicycles is essential for a convenient cycling experience. Inadequate bicycle parking may damage bicycles, increase vulnerability to bike theft, exclude certain types of bikes or users, and ultimately, serve as a deterrent to cycling. As cities roll-out new cycling infrastructure, more attention will need to be devoted to the placement, design, and use of bicycle parking. Past practices or designs may no longer meet the contemporary demands, requiring innovation in bicycle parking management. Furthermore, the research community must support cities with empirical data on bike parking behaviour, research on bike theft, as well understanding the basics of who, how and when bike parking is used. Without data, cities cannot manage this critical urban infrastructure.  


This online workshop will bring together leading researchers, practitioners, activists and entrepreneurs working on bike parking policy, management and design. We aim to learn from experiences in different cities and contexts. The workshop will be a forum for sharing innovative work, creative thinking or recent empirical findings on bicycle parking.  Over half the time will be devoted to discussion, with the other half devoted to select presentations on innovative work in this field.

Call for Abstracts
Those who have been working on innovative bike parking policies or projects are welcome to share their work in the workshop with a 10 minute presentation. We are interested in selecting the most innovative work on bicycle parking, design, policy, or management. To be considered, please submit an abstract (300-500 words) of your presentation by Friday March 18th at the registration link. Approximately 6-8 presenters will be invited to share their work, followed by a 10 minute discussion. The workshop will prioritize the conversation amongst participants, therefore the presentations will merely be our point of departure for shared learning and exchange. This format should allow non-presenters to share their knowledge and experiences. The workshop will be online, open and free.
