Poppyland Songs
My name is Bertie Anderson Haggart and I am a musician and composer from North Norfolk. A few years back my Dad showed me some journals he found in the house I grew up in in Sidestrand written by my great great aunt Kit Hood. She'd interviewed her neighbours between 1912-1914, most of whom were farmers and labourers. She wrote down their stories, songs, local lore and traditions, all sorts of things about life in North Norfolk at that time. I was very inspired by these journals and put some of the stories and verses to music, also including other stories I'd grown up hearing about locally; like the mythical dog Black Shuck.

I want to continue her work by speaking to people who live here now. Using your words I will compose more music and songs to be performed in a concert next spring at The Belfry in Overstrand.

I am looking for all sorts of people, and all sorts of stories, you don't need to have any experience making music or writing, you don't have to be born and bred here either, I just want to hear what you have to say about life here in Poppyland. The only 'rule' is that it is about life, past, present and future in Poppyland.

Thank you,
Bertie
