This project is a new initiative, to connect the PowerShell community with Students and IT Professionals alike. While the previous projects (PowerShell Conference Book), rely on people to submit their own material, this project will rely on set course material to archive the goal of this book. Authors / Editors will be required to select which chapters that you would be interested in writing / editing.

This book is for those that want to develop the knowledge and skills required for a senior level automation or administration position. It will cover the concepts that will help you develop the mindset/lay the groundwork for best practices required for advanced topics, topics that are not always covered by other books. This book will use PowerShell as the primary tool used for examples of these concepts, but the examples are not limited to only PowerShell based solutions. Once you have read this book and understand the concepts contained within, you will be well prepared for many difficult and potentially senior level technical challenges. This book will be written as a textbook resource that universities/ engineers can reference/ incorporate into course material.

Git: This chapter will introduce Git and how it can be used to store your code. It will cover typical Git commands with detailed explanations on what it is doing. This chapter will serve as a baseline for assignments being submitted.

Code Review: This chapter will explore the process of performing a code review, including what to look for and some best practices used within the community.

Publishing and Deploying Your Code: This chapter will explore the different methods of deploying your code, both internally and externally. This chapter will also demonstrate some best practices for deployments.

The AAA Approach: This chapter will explore the concepts of Arrange, Act, and Assert. It will explain the syntax of Pester testing.

Mocking: This chapter will demonstrate to users how and when to Mocking for testing.

Unit Testing: This chapter will explain Unit Testing. It will explore some use cases of when you would use unit testing.

Parameterized Testing: This chapter will demonstrate parameterized testing and explore some of the use cases for parameterized testing.

Test Driven Design: This chapter will cover the aspects of Test Driven Design (TDD).

Integration and Regression Testing: This chapter will explain integration testing. It will explore some use cases of when you would use integration testing.

Extensibility: This chapter will explore the concepts of how to architect your PowerShell scripts, functions (advanced functions), and modules for future use and reusability.

Refactoring PowerShell: This chapter will explore the concepts of how to refactor your code using practical examples from internet code. Concepts such as: Using the pipeline to your advantage. Utilizing Where-Object and the Where method to split and filter data structures. Utilizing ForEach-Object and the Foreach method. Taking splatting to the next level, showing practical solutions on how to refactor code to make it more maintainable and readable. This chapter will also spend some time with string formatting and lay the groundwork for some best practices.

Performance: This chapter will demonstrate key areas within PowerShell to make it more performant while being careful not to take it too far.

Practical Applications: This chapter will look at the practical applications of PowerShell and demonstrate how to use the engine to achieve some sample solutions by following the principles of good architecture and design.

Advanced Conditions: This chapter will explain Advanced Conditions and give some practical implementations and use cases for these conditions. For example, the use of -bor, or the usage of -like operator vs the -match operator.

Using Regex: This chapter will introduce the syntax of regex and how it processes strings. It will give some practical uses of regex. It will also give some examples for best practices of when to use regex (Select-String, "[]", -match, -replace)

Abstract Syntax Tree (AST): This chapter will demonstrate what the AST is and some typical use-cases for the AST.

Logging: This chapter will cover the basics of logging and its intended use. This chapter also wil lay the groundwork for establishing best practices that most script writers should implement. This chapter will also explore some different logging instances, for example cloud, on-prem, and pipeline.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC): This chapter will introduce DSC and its use cases. This chapter will cover IaC concepts, plus the technical elements of IaC and JSON DSC configuration. This chapter will also provide common troubleshooting used to resolve IaC issues.

Data Analytics: This chapter will explore how to use PowerShell to perform data transformation and formatting, including exploring Select expressions. This chapter will demonstrate the use of CLIXML to store complex datasets, as well as other ways to store, access, manipulate, and output data.

PowerShell Secrets Management: This chapter will explore how to implement PowerShell secrets within your environment. This chapter will detail what best practices are to be followed based upon the environment, i.e. console, OS, CICD, etc.

Script Signing: This chapter will cover how PowerShell can use script signing to protect your code from tampering. This chapter will demonstrate how to deploy trusted signed certificates within a local environment.This chapter will discuss the options for implementing a certificate signing solution for an enterprise.

Script Execution Policies: This chapter will discuss in depth how script execution policies can be used and implemented.

Constrained Language Mode: This chapter will provide an overview of constrained language mode (CLM) and its implementations using WDAC, AppLocker, and Software Restriction Policies. This chapter will explore some limitations of CLM and the impacts of those limits.

Just Enough Administration: This chapter will explain how to secure your PowerShell remoting endpoints using JEA policies. This chapter will focus on the configuration requirements to secure the JEA solution within the environment rather than on PowerShell remoting per-say.
