Introduction: Welcome to the second Sunday in Lent! In this week's Gospel, Jesus was with his friends on top of a high mountain when suddenly his clothes began to glow and two great men appeared with him - Moses and Elijah, who had died long before Jesus was born. Moses led the people of Israel out of slavery and gave them the Ten Commandments. Elijah was a great prophet who taught the people to be faithful to God. Now let's take a couple of minutes and turn to page 3 in your Good News Gospel Weekly and read this week's Gospel, "Jesus is God's Son" to see what else happened on that mountain. Then please answer the questions below.
What happened to Jesus' clothes when he was up on the mountain?

What did the voice from the cloud say?

Jesus told Peter, James and John not to tell anyone about this until when?

Great job! We see in the Gospel that this was a special moment for Jesus' friends. Jesus becomes full of light when he prays to God on the mountain. This gives us an image of how Jesus might look in Heaven after his Resurrection. And this is what helped Peter, John and James to believe that Jesus is God's Son. Their faith in Jesus grew even stronger. The Transfiguration - when Jesus' body and clothes changed - gives us a peek at our future too. If we do God's will and follow Jesus, God promises that we will go to Heaven. When Jesus comes again, our bodies will shine with God's glory in Heaven.
Big Changes! When Jesus was transfigured, the change in his appearance frightened his disciples. Even though they had been with him for many months, watching him heal and listening to him teach, they had not yet grasped Jesus' identity as God's own Son. Seeing Jesus change in the way he did was a lot for them to take in and to understand.  Change, and understanding change, is hard for most people, even kids. But God gives us a way to understand and deal with how change can be a positive thing, with many examples in the natural world.  When we look at nature we see some inevitable and beautiful changes. A perfect example of that is the caterpillar and the butterfly. Let's turn to page 2 in your Good News Weekly and read the story "Big Changes!" When you are done reading you will find in your "Unit 4 Activity Bag", you picked up this weekend, a lesson packet with a label dated "2/28/21". This activity will allow you to put together a cocoon, or pupa, with a caterpillar inside that turns into a beautiful butterfly. Follow the instructions attached to this lesson to complete the activity.
Fantastic job! In Jesus' Transfiguration, we see an anticipation of the glory of His Resurrection. In each of the reports of the Transfiguration, Jesus instructed the disciples to keep secret what they had seen until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. The disciples' confusion continued as they wondered what Jesus meant by “rising from the dead.” Until they also witness his passion and death, the disciples cannot possibly understand Jesus' Transfiguration. We, however, have the benefit of hindsight (already knowing). In our hearing of it, we see in this event an anticipation of Jesus' Resurrection, a foreshadowing of Christ's glory in Heaven, and the promise of our own resurrection. It is this knowledge, that can help us to look at how we can change and grow, just like the caterpillar, in order for us to have a chance for our bodies to shine with God's glory in Heaven.
