VMSRAMRH NEW TUTOR Application In-Person and Virtual MCSHAN READING HOMEROOM 2023-24 (Edit 2-28-2024) 112 TUTORS TO DATE THIS APPLICATION IS DESIGNED TO GATHER BOTH IN PERSON AND VIRTUAL TUTOR DETAILS, IN THE EVENT OF NEED FOR IN-HOME TUTORING. IF A QUESTION DOES NOT PERTAIN TO YOU, SIMPLY ENTER "NA" AND MOVE TO THE NEXT QUESTION, WON'T YOU? ✨WHO ARE WE? Our youth and adult tutors are passionate about children and literacy! We care about more than ABCs. Our volunteers come from all manner of life and stations in life. We are: hard-working professionals, retirees, high school and college students, church, synagogue and mosque members, unaffiliated folks, singles, parents and grandparents, mother-daughter teams, Texans, and residents of other states and countries. We are a melting pot of people of every race and creed who grow to care deeply about our students and their families. ✨WHAT WILL I DO? We partner you with our Coordinator, Dalene Buhl, and our Master Administrator, Margot McGuire, (see photo below) who will guide you through your tutoring, and will provide you with roadmaps and resources developed by experienced educators. You will begin your service with Orientation, then by embedding in a classroom to learn how McShan teachers deliver lessons, what is expected of students using the new DISD curriculum, and perhaps remaining in the classroom to support your student. ✨Our students range from those who do not know their letters to fluent readers performing well but who need vocabulary enrichment, reading for relevance, and every reader type in between. We will match you with a student based on your experience, comfort level and availability. ✨We tutor during school and even on the weekends. Some tutors partner with their students after school online or in-person. ✨DO YOU PROVIDE TEACHING MATERIALS? Yes. You will have access to a wide array of physical and online books and teaching materials. We have videos and how-to guides to get you started online and answer questions along the way. MRH has a dedicated team of volunteer leaders who are focused on helping you become the best tutor you can be. ✨WHAT DO WE DO? During the school year, we provide 45-minute, one-on-one tutoring for the students of McShan Elementary School, a public school located in Dallas, Texas populated with more than 90% refugee and immigrant students. Some are struggling, some need enrichment. All benefit from knowing that we care about them. In short, we teach reading fundamentals and the joy of learning. This year's tutoring times are yet to be determined. All times are Central Standard Time. ✨McShan Reading Homeroom (MRH) and Saturday School* partners with the McShan faculty to enhance the K – 5 classroom experience. We engage with our students in ways that make the kids want to come back. Success is when a student says “Can I read another book?”
✨McShan SATURDAY SCHOOL 2023-4 will be scheduled randomly, and all tutors are encouraged to volunteer Saturdays. ✨Please provide the following information to become a tutor with our school year program, McShan Reading Homeroom (MRH) ✨Our refugee/immigrant students aged 6 through 12 are in the utmost need of tutoring and socializing. ✨Our students will be learning basic phonics, reading, writing, and reading comprehension. ✨Mentoring your student and their family well-being is an added benefit of MRH. ✨HOW CAN I HELP? We like to say, “If you can read, you can help.” But MRH is much more than reading stories. ✨One-on-One Tutoring: Our tutors commit to at least ONE 45 minute session of tutoring per week plus equal lesson planning time. Tutors are welcome to tutor more than once each week. We are alert to student challenges both in the classroom and at home. Our tutors are comfortable helping to develop reading skills and letting our leadership team know if you sense a child is experiencing learning or emotional difficulties. ✨Co-Tutoring: Pair with a friend and co-tutor 2 students. Don’t have a partner, but want one? We’ll try to pair you with one. ✨ NOT SURE YET? Contact us! We can answer questions and arrange for you to observe a tutoring session. Email your questions to
