Story Pitch for The Pudding

Thanks for considering sending us a pitch! We review pitches as a team every Monday, so you can expect to hear back from us early in the week. If it’s been a couple of weeks since you submitted a pitch and you haven’t heard back, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at pitches@pudding.cool.

You don’t need to answer every question below, nor are you committing to abide by these responses as the story comes together, but considering each of these components now will help us to better understand and thoughtfully review your pitch.

If you’re hesitant to submit an idea, or just want a bit more guidance, use these prompts to help you clarify your thinking, strengthen your approach, and determine if your idea is a match for The Pudding.

What is your name? *
What is your story about? *
The elevator pitch, if you will.

Can you summarize in one sentence the single point you’re making?

Think of it as a snappy headline or distillation. It should not be in the form of a question.

Why is it exciting to you?

Why do you want to tell this story?

What makes this story interesting and sets it apart from others?

What will be the “aha” moment for the audience, or the surprising element?
What data do you have? What is it telling you?
What’s the supporting evidence?

What makes this essay a visual essay?

What do you imagine the piece will look like? What’s the first thing you’d draw on a whiteboard?

Conservatively, how long do you think this project will take?

Contributors often have other responsibilities, so it’s helpful to have a realistic sense of the amount of time you have to work on this.
DATA: how far along are you?

What is your bandwidth?
What type of time can you dedicate to this project, and what does your availability generally look like?
Anything else you'd like to share?
