Dear parent or guardian,

Your child is invited to participate in a survey about their experiences with school for the 2020-2021 academic year. Foundry10, an educational research organization in Seattle, is conducting research to look at young peoples’ learning experiences and the impact that COVID-19 has on learning. Our goal is to better understand how we can support youth learning and social interactions at Brier Terrace Middle School this year.

In this survey, your child will be asked questions about their learning habits and their views of themselves as learners. Additionally, we will ask questions about your child’s demographics (such as gender, race, and age). The survey can be completed on any computer with internet access, and will be completed during Advisory in mid-December. Your child will also be asked to participate in a survey in the spring to see how their opinions have changed. We are expecting 300-500 students from ESD to participate in this survey study. This survey and process have been approved by the Edmonds School District Director of Assessment and the School Board.

Participation in the study is voluntary and involves completing survey questions. Answering the survey questions should not present any risks to participants. BTM will be compensated for participating in the survey. BTM is interested in taking the survey compensation to address student needs that are identified from survey results. Your child will not benefit directly from participating in the research, but the research is meant to assess students’ needs and help improve student learning at BTM. Your child will have the opportunity to withdraw from the study at any point or skip questions they are uncomfortable answering. Your child’s answers will be kept confidential, and reports from the study will not identify individuals. Data will be compiled and analyzed over the next several months and kept at foundry10 on a secure server. Survey responses will be kept for up to 5 years.
