John is a youth worker at the local
youth club. He works with a group of twenty boys and girls from the local area.
Many of these young people come from different countries and have various
cultural backgrounds. As part of a project, John decides to ask the young
people to partake in an activity to get them to find out about the importance
of learning about each other's cultures. To start this off, John asks the young
people to each write down the first thing they think of when asked about the
other group members' cultures.
When John carried out this exercise, he was
shocked at how unaware and false some of these beliefs and perceptions were
when he read them. John identified that most of these young people have
suffered and are susceptible to being culturally biased. John decides
that before they start this project, he needs to educate the young people more
about culture.
