Our dogs come straight from the greyhound trainers' kennels to a vet to be desexed. They may spend one night with one of the Homeward Bound Hound coordinators or will go straight to one of our foster carers. We do our best to learn a bit about the dogs prior arrival, but it is not always possible, depending on where they are coming from.
Generally, when one of our carers gets a new dog, it's the first time that dog has ever set foot in a house. They can be frightened and anxious, and pretty worn out from their surgery. So the first several days can bring almost anything as the foster carer is getting to know the dog, helping them calm and get used to an incredibly different environment than they've experienced before. It can be a difficult, frustrating (sleeping on the couch!), but can also be incredibly rewarding. Occasionally you get dogs that make the transition much more easily than others. Whatever the temperament of the dog though, your role as a foster carer is focused on teaching the greyhound the basic skills, and helping them learn how to be a pet, so that they can then be re-homed with a family.
And most importantly, you will be supported throughout the process!
(If you are after a permanent new member of the family, please head over to the Adoption application. It will always include a trial period!
