Eurasian Empires: “The Ottoman Expansion in Iraqi Kurdistan: The Case of the Dynasty of Ardalan (1523-1552)”
Welcome to the third talk of the Winter Quarter for the Eurasian Empires Workshop Series!

Morgan S. Tufan is a Ph.D. Candidate at the Department of History, Stanford U. His dissertation, entitled "Bordering the Kurds: Sovereignty and Autonomy in the Sixteenth-Century Ottoman and Safavid Empires," studies the politics of allegiance among the Kurdish princes in the Ottoman-Safavid borderlands. Along with researching early modern administrative practices of the region, Morgan examines hitherto understudied Kurdish chronicles to recuperate indigenous contestations to imperial governance. He is also interested in the trajectory of the Mongol legacy in Western Asia as well as the fate of Ottoman imperialism in the Indian Ocean. Being fluent in several languages of the region, Morgan translates chronicles and administrative documents from the time period and has recently received the Walter G. Andrews Ottoman Turkish Translation Award for his efforts.

Monday, February 14, 5:30-7:00pm
