Dear Parents and Guardians,
My name is Fiona Liberge, and I am a senior in the Cognitive Science Program at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. I am seeking your permission for your child’s participation in my research about how young minds make connections between stories through the lens of Percy Jackson and a similar original myth.
The 30–45-minute interview will take place during the school day in a private room at Northfield Middle School. The participants will first be asked to read a myth I wrote with themes and plot points similar to Percy Jackson’s. They will then retell the myth in their own words. In order to prevent giving answers to later questions, I will ask the participants to name as many Percy Jackson characters as they can. Then, they will do a matching task between corresponding characters and objects in the two stories. After, I will finish assessing their expertise in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief with the completion of a series of 25 trivia questions. To finish the interview, they will answer questions about their consumption of Percy Jackson media and similar hero’s journey stories.
I would like to audio record the interview with your permission. This is to ensure that I can be fully present while talking to your child and write down their answers later. The recordings will be deleted upon completion of my study. I will also keep their identity confidential, assigning a participant ID number in place of their name. There are no particular risks or benefits to participating in this study as the questions are non-controversial and not personal. In addition, your child will give their verbal assent to participate in my study at the beginning of the interview and will be informed of their ability to stop the conversation at any time.
The Northfield School District is familiar with my advisor, Kathleen Galotti’s work and has given me permission to conduct this research at Northfield Middle School. I am hoping to conduct the interviews between January and March, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during the school day.
Before submitting this form, please feel free to contact me or my advisor if you have any questions, concerns or comments about this project! If would like to talk to someone other than us, contact the Institutional Review Board for Research with Human Subjects at Carleton College, c/o Office of the Associate Provost, Carleton College, One North college Street, Northfield MN, 55057; telephone (507) 222-4301.
