AP courses only: The Advanced Placement (AP) Program is an academic program of college-level courses for high school students. Students enrolled in an AP course can take the College Board AP Exam and have an opportunity to earn college credit. Each college’s policy is different, but most require a minimum AP score of a 4 or 3 to receive college credit. We recommend that students should check their preferred colleges’ websites for credit criteria. Course descriptions as outlined by the CollegeBoard may be viewed at http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/subjects.html.
We are delighted that you are considering enrolling in an AP or Honors class, and we desire to provide you with information to facilitate student success in these courses. AP and Honors courses require students to use analytical thinking, reading, writing, and problem-solving skills. The curriculum for an AP or Honors course is challenging and demands more effort, time, and skills than standard courses. It is important for students to thrive and find the right balance in commitments. Careful consideration should be given when taking AP and Honors classes with regards to the demands of co-curricular activities, employment, community service, etc.
Most AP and Honors courses have summer homework that is essential for preparation and must be completed before the first day of class. This homework will be available on the Nevada Union website throughout the Summer. Students will not be allowed to drop the course if they do not complete the Summer assignments.
AP and Honors course grades are calculated on the weighted GPA scale. Students with a C- or higher will earn an additional 1.0 towards their GPA. Nevada Union is committed to providing an environment that ensures all students have equal access and opportunity to take AP and Honors courses. As such, students will not be allowed to drop an AP or Honors course after August 10, 2020.
