How to scale up the number of startups that are supported from planning, through launch and on to long-term sustainability

1 What do we need to do to help more students to create startups?

1. Update the validated CURRICULUM and the description of the startup knowledge & skills needed by entrepreneurship students

2. Create more ELECTIVES so that all students have an opportunity to study entrepreneurship alongside their main academic discipline

3. Use TEACHING techniques that give greater emphasis to learning from practice and failure eg business simulations

4. Make sure ASSESSMENT helps to test/develop practical skills as well as theoretical knowledge eg teamwork

5.Partner with companies to offer more INTERNSHIPS for students

2 What do we need to do to provide more support to students?

1. Recruit more ACADEMICS with relevant real-world experience eg of working in a startup

2. Recruit more PhD STUDENTS who can teach students and share their entrepreneurship research

3. Recruit more non-academic SUPPORT STAFF eg business advisors, careers advisors etc

4. Involve more MENTORS from the local ecosystem

5. Involve more ALUMNI who can share their experiences of launching and running a startup

3 What do we need to do to give students a better chance of creating a successful and sustainable startup?

1. MANAGE EXPECTATIONS eg help students to be realistic about the typical business challenges they will face

2. After graduation offer RESOURCES & SUPPORT eg office space and legal advice

3. Improve access to FINANCE eg through introductions to investors and pitch competitions

4. Improve the FINANCIAL LITERACY of academic staff

1. Encourage and support greater DIVERSITY eg women entrepreneurs

2. Provide startup training and support for LOCAL COMMUNITIES, not just to students

3. Ensure staff and students are aware of the opportunities within their local, regional & national ECOSYSTEMS

4. Share ACADEMIC EXPERTISE between different universities and countries

5. Engage with POLICY debates eg youth unemployment in Europe and UN Sustainable Development Goals
