Trip Permission and Information: RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) Day

Orewa College year 13 students have been given the opportunity to participate in the award-winning RYDA Road Safety Education Workshop. RYDA is designed for 16-18year-olds as they begin to drive or ride in cars driven by their peers. This workshop (part of a broader programme) challenges students to change the way they think about road safety and lay the foundation for safe road use throughout their lives. Students do not need to have their license to take part in the programme.

The programme aims to increase an understanding of road safety issues (including riskfactors), educate students about their rights and responsibilities on the road and equip them with the tools they need to choose behaviours that lead to safer outcomes on New Zealand roads.

Did you know that Male drivers in the 15–19 year age group are approximately eight times more likely to crash than male drivers in the lowest risk age group of 55–59 years and female drivers aged 15–19 are about six times more likely to crash than female drivers in the lowest risk group of 45–49 year olds. Also for every fatality, there are approximately another 10 people who are seriously injured. We must equip our young people with the right tools and strategies to navigate through this.

Please read the attached flyer and visit our website www.rse.org.nz for more information and our parent resources.

RSE’s national and regional partners have subsidised this workshop for the school (normal cost $49 per student).

Please ensure you have the Orewa College app and you subscribe to the alert group “General > Trips / Events”. If there are any changes or notifications on the day of the trip, this is how we will notify parents/caregivers.

It is a privilege to participate in these events and in order to do so, your student’s attendance record must be above 85%, with a good pastoral record and they must be up to date with their work. Students who do not meet these requirements may not be able to participate.  Normal school rules apply and Manaaki Orewa is expected.  Students who let us and themselves down in this area are putting their continued involvement in school events at risk.  We look forward to a pleasant and positive experience where students are able to enhance their experiences.

Students should not bring any valuable items unless they are prepared to have them on their person at all times.  Orewa College accepts no responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged items.

Yours sincerely
