Martha Perritt Lee Educational Scholarship Application
This scholarship is established to honor the memory of Martha Perritt Lee, a devoted wife. mother and teacher. Martha loved teaching and she loved all of the young people she encountered in her life as a teacher in Franklin Parish. Knowing how important it was to encourage and to "build up" her students and those of other teachers—she always had a smile and a positive word for all. This scholarship was established to encourage serious Franklin Parish young people to enter the field of education. The funding was initially provided by her husband, Dr. Max Lee, Pastor Emeritus, of the First Baptist Church of Winnsboro. The scholarship is now awarded through First Baptist Church, Winnsboro, Louisiana.

The initial funding was ten thousand dollars ($10,000). The fund is managed by the Louisiana Baptist Foundation under the guidance of the FBC, Winnsboro Scholarship Committee. Interest from the endowment shall fund the stipend each year.

The amount of the scholarship shall be One Thousand dollars ($1,000) per year. The award is granted for only one year. Awardees who maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, may re-apply each year for up to four years, as long as he/she remains an undergraduate, full-time student.

Appropriate financial data shall be required of each applicant and shall include such things as family income, other scholarships and awards received; grants, loans; etc.

Applicant's high school records and transcripts must demonstrate serious academic intention and academic achievements with no less than a 3.0 GPA on a 4-point grading scale.

Demonstrated Christian character and Christian service plus high school extra-curricular involvement shall be considered as applications are evaluated.

Applicants who are and have been members of First Baptist Church of Winnsboro, Louisiana, for two or more years and who are majoring in education shall be given first consideration.

Applications for the scholarship shall begin at the beginning of each academic year and be submitted to First Baptist Church to the Scholarship Committee by 2:00 P.M., April 22, 2024, with no exceptions.

Members of the Scholarship Committee shall be nominated each year by the Committee on Committees and will be in a rotation so as to not have all new members each year. This rotation will also be determined by the Committee on Committees. Members will be elected by the church. Said. elected Committee shall study all applications, conduct interviews if necessary, and recommend to the church for approval, the applicant who most closely meets all of the requirements. The recipient will be notified by May 1, and the scholarship shall be awarded each year at the Baccalaureate Service.

In years when no applications are timely received or none meet the specified requirement, the scholarship shall not be awarded; and the interest earned shall be used to increase the amount of the endowment.

The application process for the next academic year will begin at the start of school following the Christmas Recess. The following are the requirements for each candidate:

Awardees may re-apply for up to four (4) years as undergraduate students. The scholarship will be paid to the student upon the verification from the University Registrar that he/she is a registered, full-time student. Verification may be presented in person or by fax (318.435.5488).

The following are the requirements for each candidate:

Eligibility
1. High School senior or an undergraduate student.
2. Full-time student or accepted into an accredited, four-year college or university in an undergraduate program.

Application Requirements
1. An official application form submitted to First Baptist Church of Winnsboro, at 502 Highland, Winnsboro, Louisiana 71295.
2. Application must be completed in its entirety.
3. Two completed evaluation sheets must be submitted with the application
E-1 Evaluation must be completed and submitted by an adult not related to you or any faculty members.
E-2 Evaluation must be completed and submitted by any current or former faculty member.
4. Official transcripts must include grades from the first semester of the senior year. For college applicants, only the first semester grades of the year requesting funds are required; along with proof of GPA.
5. Authorization to release family financial information (located on the last page). All information will be held securely and in the strictest confidence.
 
Criteria for Awarding Scholarship
1. Applicants who have been a member of First Baptist Church of Winnsboro, Louisiana for two or more years and who are majoring in education, will receive first consideration.
2. Applicants who are majoring in education, but not a member of FBC, Winnsboro, will be considered second.
3. Applicants who have maintained qualifying grades and community involvement and not majoring in education will be considered thirdly.
4. The scholarship may be needs-based for the final criteria
 
Deadline
Applications, including all required data, must be received at the First Baptist Church of Winnsboro, 502 Highland Street, by 2:00 PM, April 22, 2023.

Judging
1. The specially elected Scholarship Committee has sole authority for granting scholarship awards. Scholarship recipients will be selected based on Christian character, academic performance, recommendations, extra-curricular activities, competition of application, and financial needs.
2. Finalists will be notified by May 3rd.
3. All selections are considered final. All applications and attachments become the property of the Scholarship Committee. All information will be kept private, secure, and treated with the strictest confidence.
