SCHEDULE: Four 2-hour meetings, Spring 2020 semester. (Times & dates listed below)
LOCATION: 120 Blum Hall (Big Ideas Contest)
UNITS: 1 (Independent Study)

OVERVIEW:
This Spring 2020 workshop is tailored for UC Berkeley student applicants focused on the Art & Social Change category of the Big Ideas Contest. Other students are welcome to join, however, space is limited and all interested students MUST APPLY VIA THIS WEBFORM BELOW NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 17.

The workshop presents opportunities for students who are developing arts-based initiatives to explore business concepts (organizational design, marketing, fundraising, legal issues, financial management) via case studies, lectures and guest presentations – all focused on the theme of “Art & Social Change.”

Students who successfully complete all coursework will participate in a pitch competition, with one winning team receiving a $1,000 award for their arts-based initiative.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. New understanding of the practical tools and techniques used in launching a creative venture with social impact consequences.
2. Exploration of suitable business models for socially engaged artists and arts organizations.
3. Opportunities to experiment and refine student-generated concepts for Big Ideas “Art & Social Change” proposals.

In addition to helping students develop their proposals, this Spring workshop will provide a wealth of information and experience to inspire students to pursue their creative ambitions – both academically in future coursework and in their professional lives after graduation. The workshop runs in parallel with the LS 105 Arts Entrepreneurship course offered in the Spring, where students build on their creative business concepts to produce a detailed, fully realized business plan.
