This is a small internal Falcons Competition. The winning brewer will have the opportunity to brew their beer commercially with our friends at Long Beach Beer Lab!
There are 4 categories available for entry - a brewer can submit a maximum of two entries. Dealer's choice - want 2 small saisons? Go for it. 1 Small, 1 Farmhouse? Sure!
The hallmarks of the Saison style - dry, earthy with complex yeast character and a brisk carbonation that helps promote a bright hoppy character (think Pale Ale level of bitterness). Wide variations in adjuncts (grains like Spelt for instance) and flavors (particularly spices), but all additions should work in favor of promoting a complex beer character, not becoming a "STRAWBERRY" beer. (for instance)
The categories will be:
- Small Saison <4% ABV
- Standard Saison: 5-7% ABV
- Super Saison: 7+% ABV
- "Farmhouse": 2-10% ABV - If your beer has an assertive "funk" character from the addition of other brewing microbes (e.g. Brettanomyces) - whether from culture or naturally occurring - enter it here.
Entrant should specify any additional ingredients/microbes/flavors.
Beers will be judged at the April Members Meeting (4/2) in a Blind Format. A champion will be crowned to work in conjunction with our partner brewery to brew a beer. (Recipe maybe modified to fit system, ingredient availability, business needs)
Entrants must be a currently active member of the club. Entrants will need to bring enough packaged beer (in bottles, cans, growlers or draft, etc) to present samples to attendees. (~4-6 bottles)
