The Danger of a Single Story - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
The video tells us about Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's experiences growing up and becoming an author and being judged based on her looks and heritage.  Do you ever see that happening in your school?  What is the danger in judging someone based on appearances? *
What is the 8th Commandment? *
Martin Luther writes in the Small Catechism that this means that "We should fear and love God so that we do not tell lies about our neighbor, betray them, slander them, or hurt their reputation, but defend them, speak well of them, and explain everything in the kindest way."  What kind of actions are breaking the 8th commandment? *
Find a piece of candy or a piece of gum.  Put it in your mouth, but don't chew it.  Your mouth will start to water, and the longer you keep it in there, the harder it will be to resist chewing or swallowing it.  In the same way, "mouthwatering gossip" can be almost impossible to resist.  Have you ever had someone gossip about you?  How did you feel? *
How is breaking the 8th commandment like breaking the 5th (you shall not kill) and the 7th (you shall not steal)?   *
Politicians are known for telling "white lies" or making campaign promises that they don't intend to keep in order to be elected.  If a politician was caught telling harmful lies, would you support them?  Why or why not? *
Are there times when telling the truth would cause more harm than telling a lie?  For example, if a friend asks you if they look good in an outfit but you don't think it looks good.  Would you tell them the truth or would you spare their feelings?  Why? *
Would you lie if your lie could save someone's life?  Example: Citizens during WWII giving safe harbor to Jews when Nazi officers came to the door.  Is it still breaking the 8th commandment if you are protecting someone innocent? *
Do you think people lie more or less as they get older?  Why? *
