Catalyzing Curriculum: How to Make Diversity the Norm (Arts) - Check for Understanding
This question will help you reflect and apply your learning in the session you attended at Conference Week 2021. It will also confirm your attendance in the same.

Catalyzing Curriculum: How to Make Diversity the Norm (Arts): How to Make Diversity the Norm (Arts): This session will allow teacher candidates to understand how to include queer and trans experiences across arts/social science disciplines. For too long, 2SLGBTQIA+ identities have been confined to 20 minutes in a sexual education class--but queer identity is more than how (or who) you love, and we’re here to show you just a few ways that can be included in your pedagogical subjects or other teaching opportunities. Together, we will review learning objectives at the intermediate/secondary school levels and discuss how these curriculum requirements can be met, using diverse and intersectional case studies and resources. Although the examples are pulled from secondary school arts/social science course objectives, we believe the principles illustrated here would also be of interest to teacher candidates for younger age groups. Participants will leave with sample lesson features and a new perspective on how to improve on the work they are already doing.

This session will be presented by Eliot Newton (Hon. BA), who is the Education Coordinator for the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity (CCGSD). They have worked in and on behalf of the queer community since 2013, and like to joke that they are a “professional trans person”. Their areas of expertise are 2SLBTQ+ and trans identities and inclusion, queer and trans health, and queer-affirming spirituality, especially Christianity. They have trained more than a thousand health care professionals as well as hundreds of teachers and thousands of students and youth. When not at work, Eliot can be found at home with their husband, two cats, and their latest true-crime documentary binge. You can also find them on twitter @genderbandit and instagram at @gender_bandit. You can access additional resources on their organization website at https://ccgsd-ccdgs.org/.
