Declaration of Climate Emergency and 3-Point Action Plan: Petition to Canadian University Presidents and Universities Canada

We, the undersigned faculty, staff, and students of Canadian universities, call upon our respective institutions, as well as the membership organization Universities Canada, to sign the Global Climate Letter, sponsored by the United Nations Environment Program and organizations supporting sustainability in higher education. Signatories to this letter declare a climate emergency, and commit to fulfilling three goals--all of which are entirely consistent with the mandate of institutions of higher learning to contribute to the public good:

1. Mobilize more resources for action-oriented climate change research and skills creation;
2. Commit to going carbon neutral by 2030 or 2050 at the very latest;
3. Increase the delivery of environmental and sustainability education across curriculum, campus, and community outreach programmes.

At this time of intensifying, global climate crisis, we believe that universities must dedicate themselves to helping their communities to transition rapidly to post-carbon economies that ensure a viable future for biodiverse life on our planet.

We call upon all Canadian universities to take these actions to address the climate emergency now.

Further information about this petition:

As of January 1, 2020, the Global Climate Letter has been signed by 247 higher education institutions from around the world, as well as by 57 networks representing approximately 16,700 institutions. In Canada, 15 post-secondary institutions have so far signed the letter (12 in Quebec, 2 in BC, and the University of Toronto). This petition will be released to media, to Canadian university presidents, and to Universities Canada in early October, 2020.
