All current 4th, 5th, and 6th graders are eligible to enroll in and participate with the Flushing Community Schools Elementary Strings program for the 2022-2023 school year. Elementary Strings lessons take place at the high school BEFORE school two days per week, from 7:50 - 8:50 am.  At the end of our class students will return to their elementary buildings by bus for the normal school day.  Every effort will be made to accommodate scheduling for students who are interested in and eligible to participate in elementary band, elementary choir, and/or art club and other morning activities.

Students in elementary orchestra may choose from violin, viola, or cello.  If a student is interested in learning bass, it is recommended that they start on cello during elementary strings.  Interested students will be able to change to bass in 7th grade, when orchestra meets as a regular class during the school day.

There is no additional cost for string instruction.  Instrument rental fees through local companies range from around $20 per month to more than $50 per month, depending on the instrument and rental provider.  Students will also need to purchase the appropriate method book for their instrument and class.  School instruments and loaner books are available for students and families who are unable to rent an instrument, dependent on the instrument preference and sizing requirements of your student (I have many more school violin and violas available than cellos in elementary sizes).  I will do my best to accomodate your student's first choice of instrument if you are requesting a school instrument.

Elementary strings is broken into two groups: BEGINNER strings for students who have no previous strings experience or limited previous string instruction, and ADVANCED strings for students who have already had at least one year of string instruction. Strings lessons will begin on Monday, September 13 with the following schedule:

Monday: BEGINNER Elementary orchestra
Tuesday: ADVANCED Elementary orchestra
Wednesday: BEGINNER Elementary orchestra
Thursday: ADVANCED Elementary orchestra

Students in BEGINNER Elementary orchestra will use Essential Elements Interactive for Strings, Book 1 for the entire year.  Students in ADVANCED Elementary orchestra continue using Book 1 (first half of the year) and will progress to Book 2 (second half of the year).

To register your student for Elementary Strings, please enter your (parent/guardian) email address and press NEXT and complete the form.  If you have multiple students enrolling in the elementary strings program, please fill out one form per student.  

You and your student are invited to come to our Elementary Strings Information Meeting at 6:30 PM on Thursday, June 2nd at the Flushing Middle School cafeteria.  An instrument petting zoo will be available for students to try the various string instruments if they have never had the opportunity to play on a violin, viola, or cello previously.  Students can get sized for their instrument at our meeting as well.
