RSVP Muharram 1445 | 2023 at ICNYU
Please join the Islamic Center at NYU from July 18th - 29th, 2023 for our annual Muharram Majlis programs.

Our nightly programs will begin at 6pm beginning with dinner, followed by Qur'an by Qari Zuhair Hussaini, lamentation poetry, lecture and eulogy by Sayed Mohammed Hassan Alsheraa, and concluding with prayers at Maghrib time. Pending moon sighting, the day of Ashura will be on July 28th.

What is Muharram?

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, and it demarcates a period of religious significance for Muslims across the globe, who annually commemorate the tragedy of Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala. Particular to Shia Muslim tradition, the first 10 days are historically spent mourning, grieving, and reflecting upon Hussain and his family’s spiritual sacrifice through lamentation poetry, nightly gatherings, and various forms of cultural expression. Muharram is not only centered around sorrow, but is also a time of community unity and harmony, bringing out themes of justice, love, beauty, generosity, compassion and fidelity to the Prophet and his family.
