Application for Special Education Parent Ambassador Role in La Grange 102
We are looking for current parents in our schools to serve as volunteer special education parent ambassadors. This is a new and exciting development in our district that is intended to provide interested families with parent-to-parent camaraderie and support. As an ambassador, you will receive training about the particulars of this role, which will include:
- Being willing to speak with parents of students with special needs in your school and/or program by having your name and contact information supplied to parents of children with special needs
- Providing companionship and a listening ear to parents of children with special needs
- Fostering a welcoming, positive and supportive community environment for families with different learners
- Organizing informal coffees with parents once or twice per school year (perhaps creating an informal email list that can be used for play dates or offsite meet-ups)
- Participating in ongoing communication updates with district administration
As a volunteer serving the school district, you will be expected to help parents understand some of the basics of special education while also providing parents of children with special needs a sense of welcoming connection and social support.
The time commitment during this first year will involve 3 evening meetings spread out over the course of the year, as well as monthly check-ins with the Assistant Superintendent for Special Education, Terry Sofianos Wohlgenant, and/or the Assistant Director of Special Education Traci Milledge. The check-ins can be in person or by phone to accommodate your schedule. Other time commitments may include occasional emails or phone calls with parents and district administration as well as one or two parent coffees or gatherings that can take place either during the day or in the evening.
During this first year of the ambassador program, you will play a vital part in establishing the direction of this volunteer role. Your ideas and suggestions are welcome!
Special education administration will conduct brief interviews in September prior to gathering the first ambassador group together in order to ensure that each school and/or program receives ambassador support.
Thank you for your interest and involvement!
