BEWARE OF THE DOG!
When you see a sign that says “BEWARE OF THE DOG!”  What should be your response?
Clear selection
Obviously, the warning sign is for your benefit. Stay away from the dog, and you won’t get hurt. Yet, when some people read the Word of God (the Ten Commandments) all they see is a sign that prohibits them from petting a perfectly lovely dog that they believe they can make friends with. So rather than seeing a warning sign, they see an attempt to steal away their rights as an individual to do whatever they please.  You may have heard people say that the Bible is just a set of rules telling us what we can’t do. However, knowing what is bad for you can be a great protection to keep you from what can ultimately be destroy to you.
In this sermon series called BACK TO THE TABLE, we are going to look closely at the Ten Commandments. Today, many people seem to take offense with that list of God’s Top Ten. In 1980, the US Supreme Court forced the removal of the Ten Commandments from a display in Kentucky schools. In 2003, the courts ordered a copy of the Ten Commandments removed from an Alabama courthouse. In 2017, a 3-ton granite monument erected outside the Arkansas State Capitol wasn’t up 24 hours before a man rammed his car into it and knocked it down. These are just a few of the negative responses God’s laws have among people today.
Why do you think the Ten Commandments are offensive to so many?
Look at how Peter and Paul say that some people respond to Jesus and the message of the Gospel...
1 Peter 2:8—And, “He [Jesus] is the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.
1 Corinthians 1:18—I know very well how foolish it sounds to those who are lost, when they hear that Jesus died to save them. But we who are saved recognize this message as the very power of God.
The key to understanding these things begins with knowing the _________________________  Because God loves us, He does these incredible things. Because He loves us, He gives us these rules in order that we can live better together.
