Shifting The Mindset: Building an understanding of a future-focused, uncompromisingly learner-centered MCL mission and vision, aligning all resources to support implementation and allowing the MCL vision to drive all decisions, are critical factors in this component. Empowering learners, learning facilitators, and leaders, informed by a clearly define vision for MCL and the research on motivation and engagement, will create an enabling culture for shifting the mindset and transforming to a Mass Customized Learning Community.

Skilled Leadership: Visionary, courageous, and collaborative leadership is essential to MCL’s uncompromisingly learner-centered approach. MCL leaders empower others through a thoughtful and deliberate process that reflects the research on intrinsic motivation and effective learning and instructional strategies.

Quality Instruction: Meeting the needs of individual learners requires high quality instruction. MCL learning facilitators embrace a shared instructional model designed to maintain a focus on learning and learner outcomes. Working collaboratively, they design, implement, reflect on, and adjust their instructional strategies to meet the individual needs of every learner.

Viable Learning Outcomes: Learning outcomes are derived from a future-focused design process. They are organized in progressions that define what learners need to know and be able to do. Learning outcomes provide focus for instruction and incorporate a variety of learning formats (e.g. seminars, labs, online, etc.) with explicit consideration for how an outcome is best learned.

Motivating Learning Opportunities: Recognizing the research on intrinsic motivation, MCL leaders and learning facilitators build a culture for learning. Building a growth mindset culture, offering diverse learning formats, meeting learners at their optimal learning level and style of learning, providing choices and meaningful feedback on learning that takes place anytime and anywhere, are all contributing factors when designing motivating learning opportunities.

Varied Evidence of Learning: Providing learners with multiple opportunities to demonstrating their learning is a critical component of an MCL Learning Community. Meaningful evidence of learning options inform the learning process and empower the learner.

Customized Structures: Implementing structures that support an uncompromisingly learner-focused approach is the hallmark of a Mass Customized Learning approach. Identifying and implementing customizing structures that replace industrial-age practices, procedures, and structures is essential to building the Ideal Learning Experience for all learners.

Transformational Technologies: Equipped with “1 to 1” devices, stakeholders are positioned to access and engage with a world of information, produce evidence of learning, and manage the learning process effectively. Technology can provide 24/7 management and communication of student information, learning outcomes and complex schedules.
