Youth Conservation Corps Crew Member Application Summer '24        

The San Juan Islands Youth Conservation Corps offers a hands-on, outdoor stewardship program which incorporates field science and natural history, leadership skills training, and service projects. Crew projects will be scheduled 4 days per week, for 8 weeks, including First Aid training. The crew will work on projects including trail construction, habitat restoration, scientific monitoring and more! Collaborating partners will include federal, state and local public agencies.

APPLICANT DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in training and work days with a youth crew and adult leaders

  • Become proficient in the safe handling of hand tools

  • Learn first aid response and outdoor safety techniques

  • Develop an environmental stewardship ethic

  • Be willing to work hard, and try new things

  • Work as a cooperative member of a team

APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS

  • Age 12 - 18 or entering grades 7 - 12 in fall 2024.

  • Able to do physically demanding work, outdoors, in all weather conditions.

  • Have some experience in any of the following: camping, hiking, manual labor, household or outdoor chores, regular physical exercise.

  • Desire to be outdoors and to learn more about stewardship of the natural environment.

TERMS OF POSITION

  • 6 hours per day for 8 weeks during the summer, 4 days per week from June 24 – Aug. 15 or 18th (SJI crew works until the last day of the fair, August 18th. Program hours approximately 9:00AM – 3:00PM.

  • Priority will be given to applicants with no more than 6 days of planned absences for events such as family vacations, sports camps, 4-H events, etc.

  • Crew members must arrange transportation to and from specified sites.

  • Stipend will be paid per day participated and will be paid upon the conclusion of the season. To receive a stipend, members must complete at least 6 successful days.

  • Career and technical education credit (CTE) is available for qualified High School students.

  • April 10 – Early enrollment deadline, priority may be given to applications received by this date!

  • May 24 – Final deadline for application submission!

  • May 29 – last day applicants are notified.

Will you be available to attend work days scheduled Monday through Thursday June 24th to August 15th/18th? Applicants with less than 6 absences will be given priority for admittance. The San Juan Island YCC crew ends after the county fair on August 18th. Orcas and Lopez crews will end on August 15th.

CREW LEADER IN TRAINING
The San Juan Islands YCC program is seeking out one to two individuals per island crew who are interested in pursuing environmental stewardship beyond the summer YCC program. We want to help encourage these individuals through an established professional development plan throughout the summer to help them in achieving their goals in future environmental and conservation endeavors. Crew leader in training positions come with increased responsibilities such as facilitating group activities, collecting and submitting data, establishing professional goals, and weekly check-ins with crew leaders. The position will also receive an increase in their daily stipend from $25 to $30/workday. For applicants who are interested, please take some time to answer the questions in the section below.
