Petition to Declare the Pre-Sociology or Sociology Major

The Pre-Sociology major is only for students who have either Soc 1 or Soc 20 completed with a C or higher AND have fewer than 90 completed college units (AP units excluded). If you have more than 90 units completed, you are NOT eligible to declare the Pre-Sociology major.

Students can declare the Sociology major once all 3 major prep courses are complete (Soc 1, Soc 20, and Intro Stats) with a C or higher in each course.

Students can switch directly into Sociology major if all prep are complete; it is not a requirement that you must be declared Pre-Soc first. Having prep courses in-progress does not count as completed. The final grade must be posted on the Degree Audit Report (and must be a C or higher).

Soc 101 must be completed before Soc 102

All courses for the Sociology major must be taken for a letter grade

At least 1 Sociology elective must be a Soc course from the Soc department

The department recommends prioritizing theory, methods, and core courses before electives during first pass enrollment and that waitlisted courses are not guaranteed
