Open Letter from Australian Philanthropists on Climate Change
Open Letter from Australian Philanthropists on Climate Change

To the Prime Minister of Australia and all members of Australian Parliament

We are in an historic moment for climate action. The decisions we make today will determine the future of humanity. In the face of increasingly dangerous global warming, we want a future for Australians that is safe, prosperous, and fair.

That is why, as leading Australian philanthropists and investors, we are calling on you to urgently scale up Australia’s commitments to tackle climate change this decade.

We are calling on Australia to match the ambitions for 2030 targets of the United States, the United Kingdom and trading partners such as the European Union and Japan. This will require a commitment for Australia to at least halve our climate emissions by 2030. This is essential to meet any commitment to net zero climate pollution.

Credible climate action will safeguard our communities, protect our health from climate impacts and deliver economic and jobs growth for Australia. Climate action will bring economic opportunities and benefits to our rural, regional and urban communities. It is essential for ensuring a resilient Australia.

As philanthropists and investors, we know we can build economic prosperity powered by clean energy and a healthy environment. We do not want Australia to fall further behind the rest of the world in the global race for clean industries.

The climate crisis is the greatest threat to our existence. But it also poses a real opportunity to build a better future.

We urge you to act now to safeguard the future wellbeing and prosperity of the Australian people.
