Users of ORNL neutron sources spend significant time interacting with data. These interactions span the full workflow from proposal submission, experiment planning, data reduction and extend beyond this into analysis and publication. Together, these comprise the wholistic User Experience (UX) of ORNL neutron data systems.

Many of the systems used today evolved organically and independently of each other. Consequently, there are a broad distribution of approaches, software architectures and philosophies within ORNL neutron sciences (sometimes even within a single beamline). We believe there is significant scope to improve this experience, maximizing accessibility, usability and efficiency of the data cycle.

The interface: command line, GUI, web-based, Jupyter, ... there are many ways to interact with neutron data, which are your favorites and why?

Interactivity and Control during data reduction workflow: "I need to be to have control of every single parameter" vs "I trust the facility, keep it simple for me". What's the best balance?

Software performance (or lack thereof): share experiences of disappointments and successes reducing and analyzing data. Are there acceptable limits for trading fidelity for speed, ease of use or stability?

Consistency between instruments: currently there is is a huge diversity of data handling approaches between different instruments. Harmonizing these would make it easier to transition between the beamlines. Is this important, and how best to achieve?

Documentation and training: Tutorials are a great way to learn new systems, but what is the best way to do these (youTube, documents, one-on-one instruction?). To what extent can good UX negate the need for documentation?

Data curation and searching: How can we simplify and optimize processes to fund the most useful data amongst everything else?

User Program software: discuss the user experience of IPTS tools (for proposal submission and review, experiment communication and training/work controls) and related systems including the Guest Portal, access/badging requests system, and the online training interface.

ORNL does not have have resources of Apple or Google, so what are realistic expectations? What areas might we be able to compromise on, what areas are essential?
