Appeal for the Declaration of 18 May as the Universal Day for Prevention of Militarism and Authoritarianism
The Christian Conference of Asia, the May 18 Foundation (South Korea), and the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) call for your participation to end militarism and authoritarianism.

Please join us to campaign for the designation of May 18 as the ‘Universal Day for Prevention of Militarism and Authoritarianism’ in the global move to end militarism and authoritarianism and to realise secure democracies where each person enjoys their fundamental rights as enshrined in their constitutions.

May 18 holds great importance in our common struggle against authoritarianism. In 1980, it marked the beginning of a ten-day democratic uprising of the people of Gwangju in South Korea against the military coup and dictatorship which attempted to violently suppress them. In the pursuit of justice, equality, and the protection of human rights, much civilian life was lost; but ultimately the people achieved a democratic society.

Stories such as this are familiar in each country. The nature of the problem is such that each person can relate to it and identify themselves with the struggle. The call to end militarism and authoritarianism in all forms everywhere is an expression of solidarity and acknowledges the potential of collective action. Your signature holds the power to ultimately serve as a strong warning to other authoritarian regimes about the consequences of their draconian actions, and stand for the emancipation and liberation of all people, everywhere.
