Black Theatre Lab Registration
Thank you for your interest in the Black Theatre Lab! We look forward creating a welcoming and inspiring workshop for you. The objectives of this workshop are as follows:

  • To provide students with a foundation of Black theatre history and an understanding of Afrocentric methodologies.
  • To supplement existing academic curricula with culturally relevant instruction and materials.
  • To engage students in practical exercises that translate theoretical learning into tangible artistic expression.
  • To contribute to the development of Sandbranch- Maroon Arts and Culture’s legacy project, through student-driven research and creative input.
The workshop will take place at the Allen Theatre on the Pomona College campus (300 E Bonita Ave, Claremont, CA 91711)

In order to meet these objectives, we need to ensure that you are fully committed to the schedule and the process. Workshop dates are:

March 13, 12-4pm

March 14, 12-4pm

March 15, 12-4pm


Day 1: What is Afrocentric Theatre?

- Focus: Introducing students to Afrocentric perspectives in theatre.

- Activities: Afrocentricity X Dramaturgy Workshop

- Movement and Visualization

- Materials: Distribution of a "Sandbranch Syllabus"


Day 2: Practical Application and Creative Exploration

- Focus: Implementing Afrocentric approaches through practical exercises.

- Activities: Guided by professional theatre artists, students will conduct research and participate in exercises to embody their findings.

- Outcome: Creative pieces that could potentially contribute to the development of Sandbranch


Day 3: Further Exploration and Presentation:

- Students will showcase their work in a presentation, demonstrating the application of Afrocentric methods in theatre development.
