Beyond the physical amenities: Cafetopia provides you with a safe home. You can return to camp and recharge after you party and express yourself at Burning Man 2023.
We use simple criteria while building a camp for a fun burn each year: we invite givers in and we keep out those who don't understand Communal Effort.
Cafetopia is a community on and off playa. You can expect one reunion in Austin, Texas, and the ability to reconnect with those globally in your travel. We've seen this, and absolutely love the magic in our Whatsapp Group.
History and Leadership
Cafetopia formally Itopia was founded by Kirti Kana and Kristy Mae in 2019. So far we have brought our camp to life in 2019, 2022, and soon to be 2023. The camp lead is Kirti Kana and is supported by an amazing team of 14 Camp Leads and Supporting Members.
Work:
Our work agreement with our camp members is designed to be balanced between maximum playa-gift and maximum burn-time for you. Every camp member is a worker and we justify our presence and good placement on-playa with a fantastic playa gift: our magical cafe offering.
During the Burn, you'll contribute three volunteer shifts to camp. During scheduled volunteer shifts we ask that you work sober for effectiveness and safety.
To paint the picture: a shift can look like helping work the cafe from 7:45am to 11:30am, or helping with a kitchen shift from 11:00am-1:00pm.
Strike:
During Strike which starts on Sunday morning 8:00am and continues into Monday 7pm Exodus everyone will be assigned to camp Lead and have a reasonable task and a team to assist the Leads with that task to help pack up all of camp.
We ALL leave together after the last MOOP sweep happens in camp Monday 7pm.
Cost Share:
Our camps cost share are designed to be as low as possible while implementing the camp vision, paying for itself, and providing for inevitable playa surprises.
For those joining after August 1st camp dues rise to $950
Why the rise in price? You're coming in late, and it means we need more equipment for the kitchen to feed our extra camp members.
There is a Payment Plan Available if needed. 📆
If you're able to contribute more and help us reach our 15k Fundraising Goal we welcome it!
Camp Cost Shares are more expensive than in 2022 because in 2022 Camp Finance Lead Andy, Kristy, and Kirti covered the shortfall from having too-cheap camp fees in 2022.
This year’s $950 cost share ensures camp will continue without needing donors. The fee may decline next year as debts are paid off and as fundraising happens. Our overall goal is to run camp as cheaply as possible while not slamming individuals with exorbitant bills.
Camp dues are paid through:
Venmo to @kirtikana or
via PayPal using a Friends & Family transfer to paypal.me/kanakirti or kirtimkana@gmail.com
Camp Dues go into a dedicated Camp Checking Account controlled by Camp Leads Kirti & Andy.
Sliding Scale and Discounts For Camp Cost Share:
A sliding scale is available for those in financial need who ask. Large Discounts for the cost share are available if a camp member participates during Build Week, helps with Transport, picks up extra shifts, or helps with unloading in Reno to our storage unit on Tuesday.
Refunds for Admitted Campers
Camp Fees can be refunded on request by July 20th 2023. After July 20th there are no refunds of Camp Fees.
Canceling Attendance With Camp for Admitted Campers
Life happens and we understand. If you are admitted to camp but cannot go to Burning Man 2023 please cancel your attendance before 8/3/2023. Cancellations after this date, excluding a legitimate family or personal emergency, will be taken into account if you apply with camp again.
In the past Camp has had a few very last-minute cancellations and that denied other people their chance to Burn with us because there is not enough time shortly before the event to properly vet and acculturate new people.
