CTTT Learning Series: Session 4 - Doctrine of Discovery
Saturday, August 22: 1:00pm (PT); 2:00pm (MT); 3:00pm (CT); 4:00pm (ET)

With the postponement of this year's National Gathering due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the NG Planning Team sent out a new Call for Proposals in order to offer CTTT members a regular, monthly opportunity to connect, to learn, to share. The first session in May was "Tapping the Unrecognized Superpowers of Anti-Racism Allies," led by Dr. David Campt. The second session in June was an "Introduction to Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience (STAR) for Cultural Competence," led by Donna Minter and Crixell Shell of the Minnesota Peacebuilding Leadership Institute. The third session in July was "How Researching Family History Can Be So Emotional: Or, Why I Had a Meltdown in the Archives" (all of which can be viewed on the CTTT YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/comingtothetable). There will be sessions offered in coming months on publishing your family history, and more. In August, CTTT offers:

The Doctrine of Discovery:  What is it and why is it relevant today?

- Join long-time CTTT leader Crixell Shell for a discussion about the Doctrine of Discovery.

The Doctrine of Discovery is a series of Papal Bulls that legally and spiritually justified global expansion of Christianity and European power through exploitation, genocide and enslavement of indigenous people. Although issued in the 15th Century, the Doctrine of Discovery, remains embedded in our laws and social constructs. The United States' legacy of enslavement has roots in the Doctrine of Discovery, it is an important part of the discussion that is often unknown and left out as we acknowledge and try to heal racialized historical wounds. During the learning session, we will take a trip back to Medieval Europe, define the Doctrine, and discuss it's impacts on us today. All are welcome to join us.

Crixell Shell, MS, Assistant Executive Director, Minnesota Peacebuilding Leadership Institute (Peacebuilding) and Local CTTT Group Leader, is a cis-gender, African American woman with a professional legal and technology background. She was in the very first Minnesota Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience (STAR) training cohort in 2010 and since then, she has been an integral part of the development of the STAR Training and CTTT in Minnesota. Crixell facilitates 3 CTTT gatherings a month. To learn more about Crixell and Peacebuilding, visit www.mnpeace.org.

This 90-minute, online interactive presentation is FREE to all those associated with Coming to the Table. Space is limited to 100. These sessions have been in high demand, so please register early. Sponsored by Minnesota Peacebuilding Leadership Institute and Coming to the Table.
