Known Session 2
When a teen misses a session of High School Faith Formation, the Concord Carlisle Catholic Collaborative expects that teen to view the video(s) missed and complete this simple online form.... except this week, there are no videos, so some additional instructions are provided.

Session 2 is titled "Vocal Prayer". Parents (or another adult) should download the Parent Guide (sent with the flocknote) and use it to work with the teen through parts of this section. The teen should have a copy of the Participant Guide.

Keep in mind that the quality of your response will help Tony and his Faith Formation Leaders determine if you actually engaged this content and material.

Overview
Prayer is probably unlike most things you (teen) will do in life, where you practice then perform (sports, theater, school work, etc). With prayer, you just do it. You get better at it by keep doing it.

This series is meant to be an "apprenticeship" in prayer - you do it alongside a mentor / leader (in the case of doing it at home, likely a parent).
Theme Scripture: Psalm 95:1-2
Come, let us sing joyfully to the Lord;
Cry out to the rock of our salvation.
Let us greet him with a song of praise,
Joyfully sing out our psalms.
Consider
Words are powerful. And words are uniquely human. Animals can use sound and body language. There is even some evidence that apes can draw! But no other creature has the power of speech.

And words are powerful in prayer. Today we are going to work through about vocal prayer.
What do you think vocal prayer is?

What are some examples of prayers that you might say out loud, or are familiar with? Check all that apply.

This whole series is about starting a habit of daily, personal prayer. How do you feel about that? (Check all that apply)
*
Required
Look again to Psalm 95:1-2. What words of vocal expression do you see here?
*
Have you ever prayed the rosary? What was that experience like? (If you have no idea what praying the rosary means, check out the video below)
*
Pray with Us: the Holy Rosary (Ascension Presents)
What is your favorite title for God? What do you usually call God?
*
Gratitude: one way to pray to God is to be grateful. What are some things or people that you are grateful for?
*
Praise: God doesn't need our compliments, but we need to remember these things. Now note everything good about God.
*

Your parent (or another adult) should have reviewed the Parent Guide. What thoughts did they share with you about prayer in general, and vocal prayer specifically?

Commit
As we embark on this journey of building a habit of daily prayer, it is important to remember that it is just that: BUILDING. We don’t expect you to go and spend an hour in prayer every day immediately. We are going to add one block at a time. The first block is vocal prayer.

So this week, commit to a few minutes of intentional vocal prayer every day. And remember “vocal” prayer can include things like journaling.

Some suggestions (choose one, if you're looking for specific suggestions):
1. write down or say out loud things you are grateful for each day (3-5 items)
2. pick a Psalm to read and pray with each day (suggestions: 8, 23, 27, 62, 63, 96, 103, 123, 131, 139, 145)
3. Invite the Lord into your day and actions by praying, something like "Lord, I believe, help my unbelief!" (Mark 9:24)
4. read a parable or teaching of Jesus each day, and respond how you see yourself in that story or applying that teaching. (Tony added this one)
Commit - follow up: which option above will you commit to?
