Fighting Food Insecurity in the DMV area

We are currently delivering groceries to over 40 households in Montgomery County with a growing wait-list of families who need support. Families are referred to us by the county or area churches, and thanks to our volunteers, they receive a custom delivery of fresh food, produce, cleaning products and personal items each week.

Our mission is unique as we want to connect volunteers with families and let the recipients customize what they need. Some families are recovering from COVID-19, some need help feeding their children, some request fresh fruits and vegetables, and all gratefully accept anything our volunteers can provide.

HOW IT WORKS
We ask volunteers to order twice a month for their individual/family. A second volunteer is assigned to alternate weeks to ensure the families have their weekly needs met. We welcome volunteers who would like to participate more or less frequently.

Each Saturday, volunteers receive a grocery list compiled by their individual/family. Our ask is to purchase and deliver a maximum of $45 from the list, unless volunteers feel inclined to give more. If the grocery request list is long, we recommend volunteers select the basics and some fruits and vegetables to meet their budget. We ask that volunteers deliver groceries the following Mondays.

Some volunteers purchase items and deliver in person, others order online and deliver in person, and many use an online service such as InstaCart.

Please indicate your interest:
How frequently would you like to volunteer to provide groceries to family or individual?
Clear selection
Do you speak any languages besides English?
Do you plan to order via an online service or purchase and deliver yourself? (This can change; knowing a general preference helps us assign for families who live in apartment buildings.)
What is your zip code? (This helps in assigning families in closer proximity.)
To learn more about how this volunteer effort began, watch the WETA video linked below. Though we are still delivering a few meals each week, this has predominantly become a grocery effort, with a growing list of hungry families.

Many thanks to all of our volunteers and collaborators in our community, as well as our parishioners at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church and the congregation of Silver Spring United Methodist Church.
