The Davis Cemetery District is installing a permanent COVID-19 memorial at
820 Pole Line Road. This memorial will feature a walking path, art installations, seating/reflection space, and informational signage.
Visitors will follow a pathway and pass under four archways, each artistically designed with themes related to our community’s experience with and response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pillars will feature mosaic art while the archways will be painted murals.
The hope is that the memorial will provide a meaningful place of reflection and comfort for our community as we continue to process the loss of loved ones and other pandemic-related losses, as well as a place of reflection and comfort for anyone in our community experiencing loss and grief. The memorial will also serve as a permanent tribute to the many ways our community came together to face the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Cemetery District has formed a Memorial Subcommittee and an Art Team to complete this project. The lead artist for this project is Davis local, Wesley Horn. Joining Wesley is Brenda Cibrian, Donna Lemongello, Ro Mottsmith, and Jennifer Nachmanoff. W
ork on the memorial pathway and archway infrastructure is already underway, planning for the mosaic and mural artwork is beginning, and we hope to have the project completed by September of this year. More information regarding this project and links to each artist can be found here.
COMMUNITY INPUT
We circulated an initial survey in March 2022 and received a small sampling of community feedback. Now, as we work out the design vision, we have a few brief questions that would help us in our goal to ensure the memorial honors and reflects the lived experience of our community. Thank you for taking a few minutes to respond - your thoughts and ideas are greatly valued and will be used to inform the imagery and designs for the memorial’s artwork.
