Guelph-Wellington Charter for Food Justice
Transforming our food system is one of the most impactful things we can do to create healthy communities, address climate change, and regenerate our natural environment. But to build a future food system that meets the needs of everyone, we need to get to the root cause of the inequities we see today.

White supremacy, colonialism, patriarchy and capitalism have had a detrimental effect on the lives of people and the planet—and have played an influential role in shaping how food is grown, distributed and consumed in our region. Recognizing this, it’s time to take a closer at who our current system serves, who it doesn’t—and commit to leveling the playing field.

The Guelph Wellington Charter for Food Justice is a tool to help us navigate this path forward.

It offers a vision for a better food system—one where everyone equitably shares the benefits and risks of where, what, and how our community produces and accesses food. It also acts as a guiding document that helps increase awareness of pressing food-related issues in our community and facilitates an integrated, community-driven approach to food policy development.

United behind a common vision, invested residents, growers, producers, businesses, governments, and community groups can use the Charter to springboard important conversations and initiatives, cultivate more diverse leadership, and create a vibrant, sustainable, and food-secure community.
