Group Leader Pre-Trip Insight Form
We are looking forward to sharing a service-retreat week at Bethlehem Farm with your group. As an organization we are seeking to be ever-more welcoming; we are joyful to celebrate diversity and value each person for who they are. We also wish to encourage the "culture of encounter" that Pope Francis calls us to, as we encourage dialogue and overcome snap judgments and stereotypes. Please answer these 5 short questions to help us be sensitive to the particular situation of your group as we prepare to minister to them.
Thank you!

How are members of your group responding to the knowledge that they will not use technology (phones, computers, tablets, etc) during their service-retreat week?
Please list the ways you have prepared for the Bethlehem Farm service-retreat week with your group, if any. (I.e.: utilized pre-trip meeting formats from our website, read about Appalachian history, discussed service, etc.)
Please share any fears, reservations, or hesitations your group brings with them into the experience. [Some examples include someone concerned about serving in a "conservative" state due to their ethnic, racial, gender or religious identity; someone from an immigrant family nervous about interactions with rural people who may hold different views about immigrants; or someone who is unchurched nervous about participating in a faith-based community.]
Please share with us any stereotypes of Appalachian people that your group holds that may affect openness to serving the people of this area.
Are there any traditions or values of your group that we should take special care to acknowledge during the week (an ethnic celebration, someone's birthday, etc.)?
We like to welcome people home with a hug, as a way of welcoming Christ in each person who comes. We recognize that a hug is a welcome "hello" for some, a healthy stretch for others, and may be an act some wish not to participate in at all. Please list here anyone in your group who would prefer a sign of peace instead of a hug, so that everyone may experience a warm welcome.
