For our next Faculty Seminar (August 2nd, Wednesday, 19:00-20:30, Beijing Time), As you may be aware, ChatGPT has gained significant popularity and is widely used as an AI-based tool in various educational settings. At GEC Academy, we considered ChatGPT a groundbreaking technological innovation that has the potential to revolutionize education by potentially replacing teachers and face-to-face teaching and bringing about new changes in the field. We also understand the concerns surrounding using AI tools like ChatGPT in students' coursework, assessments, and classes. While we acknowledge the impact of AI technology on traditional education, we also recognize the importance of preserving students' independent thinking and learning. Therefore, given these concerns, we decide to organize an onsite seminar for our August faculty meeting. We aim to explore questions such as whether ChatGPT has the potential to replace teachers and current educational methods. Additionally, we intend to share insights and strategies on how to ensure the proper usage of ChatGPT in students' academic pursuits and creative endeavors.
This onsite seminar will consist of three main sections:
- Keynote Speaking: In the first section, we will have esteemed keynote speakers delivering informative talks on various aspects of ChatGPT in education. Their insights will lay a strong foundation for further discussions throughout the seminar.
- Open Discussion: Following the keynote speeches, we will facilitate an open discussion where participants can share their experiences and perspectives on addressing the new changes and challenges posed by AI tools in their respective universities. This discussion will also provide an opportunity to talk about what new changes can ChatGPT bring to GEC courses and to express attitudes towards students using ChatGPT for writing essays or completing coursework in GEC courses. Together, we will brainstorm potential solutions and strategies to effectively handle this situation, considering the principles of independent thinking and learning.
- Q&A Session: The final section of the seminar will be a free-form question and answer session. Participants will have the chance to ask questions and seek further insights from the speakers and other attendees.
